For individuals with developmental disabilities, understanding healthy sexuality can present numerous challenges. Preparing these individuals for adulthood is often a daunting task for parents and educators. The desire to keep our children safe sometimes leads us to believe that shielding them from information will eliminate risks. However, engaging in sexuality education can yield many benefits, including improved social skills, independence, and positive behavior changes.

Discussing this subject can make parents and educators uncomfortable. Many caregivers struggle to find effective ways to present this information in a manner that people with special needs can comprehend. Dr. Amor Kok, a Licensed Professional Counselor, is well versed in effective stress management techniques and strategies to convey this information, helping to frame sexuality as a natural part of life rather than a “problem.” Jenny Bellamy serves as the Project SEARCH Instructor for the public school system at Fayette Piedmont Hospital.

This meeting will be particularly important for parents of children in middle school, high school, and beyond. It is intended for caregivers and educators, not for your loved ones with disabilities. Depending on the feedback received at the conclusion of this meeting, we may schedule an additional informational session on another evening directed toward the kids, rather than parents.
